The Writer's Weekend with Steve Chandler and Michael Neill

“This is an absolute necessity for anybody today. You must have a room, or a certain hour or so a day, where you don’t know what was in the newspapers that morning, you don’t know who your friends are, you don’t know what you owe anybody, you don’t know what anybody owes to you. This is a place where you can simply experience and bring forth what you are and what you might be. This is the place of creative incubation. At first you may find that nothing happens there.
But if you have a sacred place and use it, something eventually will happen”

~ From Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth (with Bill Moyers)

Are you a writer, which is to say you spend time most weeks writing, an author, which is to say you pour your writing between the covers of a book or screenplay, or simply someone who has something worth sharing and would like to get better at putting thoughts into words and words onto a blank page for others to read?

We put ourselves into all three of these categories at times, and are very much looking forward to sharing what we’ve learned over the course of writing dozens of books (including ten bestsellers) and helping others write dozens more (including Paul McKenna’s bestselling “I Can Make You…” series with over seven million copies sold worldwide).

Here’s what Michael has to say about the program:

Anyone can write, but not everyone has something to say. This was certainly true of me early in my writing career. I was “a preacher in search of a gospel” – someone who knew that I could say things in a way that people liked to hear, but was equally sure that I had very little (if anything) worth saying.

I wrote sketch comedy, edited other people’s books, coached screenwriters, and did a bit of ghosting, but whenever I would hear the Robert Frost quote “No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader”, I knew that much of what I was writing for myself was devoid of the inner magic that brings people and ideas to life.

But even after people wake up to the creative force inside them, they are often surprised at how difficult it can be to give it voice and share it with others. This is why I have always had a soft spot for a group of people I call “emerging voices” – they have something beautiful to share with the world but are still finding and evolving their own unique voice to share it in.

Whether you want to write books, screenplays, or even just put words to the music of your soul, Steve and I have created this program as an opportunity for you to hear the music inside you more clearly, find your unique voice, and give yourself the time and space for it to grow in confidence, volume, and love.

When you do, your relationship with the creative force will become more intimate when you bring your genius to life.

Here’s what Steve has to say about the program:

I majored in Creative Writing in college and the best part of the program was being with other aspiring writers and seeing that whatever was holding me back was an illusion common to all of us and nothing about me in particular.

The illusion was that I was not “original” or “creative” enough to be a writer. We all had that fear, and we all eventually saw that it was not relevant. We saw that anything written from the heart and then edited later from clarity of mind had the potential to move the reader. We could all do that once we got into the flow of just writing. This course will be about diving into that flow.

This course will be a joyful and interesting exploration of the creative writing process….how natural it is to express yourself freely, and how to identify (and drop out of) the beliefs that get in the way. We will not recommend “superior” techniques or tips, but we will brainstorm them to see how unlimited the options are for becoming productive.

I’m looking forward to sharing my experience in the field of creative writing and working with everyone who attends so that we can all find our voice and our path as writers.

I use as writing inspiration a book by Brenda Ueland called If You Want to Write.  In it she says William Blake has inspired her on this subject of being creative. Blake said, “Imagination is the Divine Body in every person.”

Brenda Ueland says, “Blake thought that this creative power should be kept alive in all people for all of their lives.  And so do I.  Why?  Because it is life itself.  It is the spirit.  In fact it is the only important thing about us.”

What Michael has to say about Steve:

Steve Chandler

Steve Chandler is the author of dozens of books on subjects ranging from Jane Austen, to baseball, to business and beyond. Prior to becoming an author and a seminar leader and coach he spent years as a sportswriter, an advertising copywriter and a professional songwriter. His latest book, Death Wish, is about addiction recovery.

Steve has been an inspiration to me since I first read 101 Ways to Motivate Yourself over twenty years ago. Since that time he has been my coach, client, colleague, and friend, and has done more to help me “own” my writing than any other person.

What I love most about his coaching is its unpredictable nature. His in the moment take seems to come out of nowhere and yet is absurdly relevant to the goals and challenges of every one of us who wants to write.

I’m excited to be back at the front of the room with him  and to be inspired by his unique perspective on writing and getting beyond our personal psychology to the creative power within.

I always enjoy teaching courses with Michael and experiencing his wit and wisdom as a facilitator. He has been a friend and a mentor of mine for years.

What’s exciting about this course is my opportunity to hear his trade secrets about creative writing. I have loved his books for years, and I start my week every Monday reading his Caffeine for the Soul blog.

He is one of the very few people in his field who writes as well as he speaks, and I’m continuously inspired by the way his writing is always simple, direct, colorful and poetic.

As always, I will learn a lot from Michael in this course.
